Galvanized pipe is steel water pipe coated with zinc to resist rust, used widely in homes before copper and plastic took over in the 1960s. The zinc eventually wears away and the steel underneath corrodes, building up rust and mineral scale that narrows the pipe's interior. Over decades the bore can shrink to a fraction of its original size, strangling water flow and shedding rust into the water before the pipe finally begins to leak.

Many of Hutchinson's older homes near downtown and in established neighborhoods were plumbed with galvanized steel when they were built. It was the standard supply material for decades. Minnesota's mineral-rich water can accelerate the internal scaling, so by now the original galvanized lines in these homes are often well past their useful life and visibly restricted.

Galvanized failure is gradual but real: restricted flow makes showers and fixtures weak, rust discolors the water and can stain fixtures and laundry, and the corroded steel eventually leaks — often at threaded joints inside walls. Where galvanized is connected directly to copper, galvanic corrosion speeds the deterioration at that junction. The bigger practical issue is usually a whole system reaching the end of its service life at once.
Corroded galvanized pipe isn't restored by cleaning; the accepted remedy is replacement with modern copper or PEX by a licensed plumber, commonly a whole-house repipe since the entire system ages together. Where galvanized meets copper, a dielectric union is used to slow galvanic corrosion. We document the material, its condition, and any signs of restriction; we don't quote the work.
