Before the Snow

Fall prep that pays off all winter.

Service the furnace

Have the heating system inspected and the filter changed. A failure at -20°F is an emergency you want to avoid.

Clean the gutters

Clear leaves so meltwater can drain instead of feeding ice dams and backups.

Check attic insulation

Adequate insulation and ventilation keep the roof cold and prevent ice dams. Now's the time to add it.

Seal drafts

Caulk and weatherstrip windows and doors to keep heat in and energy bills down.

Disconnect hoses

Drain and disconnect exterior hoses and shut off outdoor spigots to prevent burst pipes.

Test the sump pump

Make sure the sump pump works before snowmelt season tests it for real.

During Winter

Stay ahead of the freeze.

Through the season, watch for warning signs: large icicles and ice ridges at the eaves signal an ice-dam problem; frost on the inside of windows points to humidity and ventilation issues. Keep snow raked off the lower edge of the roof, keep the area around the furnace and water heater clear, and let faucets trickle during extreme cold spells to protect vulnerable pipes. Keep walkways clear so meltwater and ice don't pool against the foundation.

Protecting the Pipes

Frozen pipes are preventable.

Burst pipes are one of the most damaging and common winter claims in Minnesota. Insulate pipes in unheated areas like crawlspaces and exterior walls, keep the home heated even when you're away, open cabinet doors under sinks on bitter nights so warm air reaches the pipes, and know where your main water shutoff is in case the worst happens. Heading out of town? Don't set the thermostat below about 55°F.

FAQ

Common questions, answered.

How do I prevent frozen pipes in winter?
Insulate pipes in unheated areas, keep the home heated to at least 55°F even when away, let faucets trickle during extreme cold, and open under-sink cabinets so warm air reaches the plumbing. Know where your main shutoff is, just in case.
When should I service my furnace?
Have it inspected and the filter changed in the fall, before heavy use begins. A mid-winter failure during a Minnesota cold snap is both dangerous and expensive to fix on an emergency basis.
How do I keep ice dams from forming?
Keep the attic well-insulated and ventilated so the roof deck stays cold, clean the gutters before winter, and rake snow off the lower edge of the roof. The real fix is in the attic — see our ice-dam prevention guide.
What are the most important winter prep tasks?
Service the heating system, clean the gutters, check attic insulation and ventilation, disconnect outdoor hoses, seal drafts, and test the sump pump. These five or six items prevent the costliest winter damage.
Should I rake snow off my roof?
Removing snow from the lower few feet of roof with a roof rake helps prevent ice dams and is safer than climbing up. Don't chip at ice on the roof — it damages shingles and is dangerous.
